Ovarian Problems
Ovarian Problems
There are a lot of different conditions which can cause ovarian problems. Your doctor can tell what is causing your problems according to the symptoms you report and will use this information to decide on your treatment. Because the ovaries are part of a woman’s reproductive system, women who are having ovarian problems may have a hard time conceiving. This might even be impossible depending on the person’s circumstances.
The ovaries are also the biological system that gives a woman her female characteristics and makes her look like a woman. One and a half inches in length, there is an ovary on each side of the uterus. These store and release the reproductive eggs and contain a woman’s entire stock of eggs for her lifetime.
Most women don’t develop ovarian problems until they are old enough to have their first menstrual cycle. The chances of a woman developing such problems continue to increase with age. The most common conditions that women develop involving the ovaries are ovarian cysts. This can develop into a serious ovarian problem and, although the causes are not known, affect a very large percentage of women. Not all women experience symptoms or have only mild symptoms. But some do experience more severe symptoms such as severe pain, bleeding, and irregular menstrual cycles. Most ovarian cysts are not a problem and go away on their own.
Some who experience problems with polycystic ovarian syndrome also have other ovarian problems than others who do not. POS is an endocrine disorder which can lead to infertility in women and can manifest other symptoms such as excessive hairiness, obesity, irregular periods, and acne. Diabetes and resistance to insulin are closely linked to POS.
There are other serious problems involving the ovaries that women must be made aware of such as ovarian cancer. This particular type of cancer was originally known as the “silent killer” because it was not usually detected until it had spread to other organs. Now it has been discovered that women do have symptoms in the early stages of this disease which makes earlier detection possible. However, these are very vague symptoms and are very similar to other diseases and can be misdiagnosed. Ovarian cancer can manifest the same symptoms as a bladder infection and may even be diagnosed as IBS, stress or depression before the real cause is discovered.
Anytime you feel an abdominal fullness or pressure, the feeling of urgency to urinate, or pain and cramping in the abdomen or pelvic area, lower back pain or painful intercourse, be sure and contact your doctor and report these symptoms. Do not ignore these symptoms, thinking that they will go away on their own. Even though most ovarian cysts are benign, it is wise not to take chances. Many of these are the same symptoms as those of an ovarian cyst and should be checked out right away. Ovarian problems can become serious of not taken care of early enough and if that happens, surgery might be required.
