Ovarian Cyst Pain
Ovarian cysts are quite common for most women who don’t even know that they have an ovarian cyst. Ovarian cyst pain isn’t always the first sign of a problem either. These cysts are simply a sac which develops on or in the ovary and are filled with fluid or mucous. There are quite a lot of symptoms that are caused by ovarian cysts, but ovarian cyst pain which is in the abdominal or pelvic regions can be very disturbing. This pain is usually caused by the presence of one or more cysts.
Painful Menstrual Cycles
Some women have very painful menstrual periods due to ovarian cysts. This condition is known as dysmenorrhea. If this pain is because of an ovarian cyst, the pain can occur anytime during the woman’s cycle. If you have been diagnosed as having a “functional” cyst, then the pain you experience is due to an increase in hormone production. The cyst reacts to this surge in hormones in the bloodstream. This type of cyst usually accompanies the condition known as endometriosis and is caused by uterine tissue growth on the outside of the ovary. This can cause very painful cramps in the ovaries.
One of the reasons that endometrial cysts cause ovarian cyst pain is because the cells that make up the endometrial cyst produce prostaglandins that cause uterine contractions. These contractions can become very painful during a woman’s cycle, much like labor pains. These are the only type of cyst which actually has ovarian cyst pain as a symptom.
Pain during Intercourse
Endometrial cysts can cause sexual intercourse to be very painful for a woman. During the act of intercourse, the cysts can become irritated, causing pain. If the cyst is ruptured, this can also cause intense pain during intercourse. However, this can be true of all ovarian cysts.
Ovarian Torsion
With the presence of ovarian cysts, if the cyst twists the ovary this can cause intense pain. This happens because the flow of blood to the ovary has been cut off. This twisting is called ovarian torsion. It can cause nausea, vomiting and very severe pain.
Painful Urination
Ovarian cysts can also cause painful urination for women. This can be caused by either a large or ruptured cyst applying pressure to the bladder.
Ruptured Cysts
Sometimes an ovarian cyst can burst or rupture. As stated above, this can cause very painful sexual intercourse. It can also manifest as pain during one’s menstrual period. Sadly, with an ovarian cyst that ruptures, the pain is sudden and very severe. Usually this is located in the abdomen or on one side of the pelvic area. This is caused in part because the fluid that was in the cyst irritates the lining of the pelvis. This pain usually subsides after a day or two.
Not all women suffer from ovarian cyst pain, while others do. If you do suffer with pain it is wise to check with your doctor. Some cysts do become malignant and the doctor needs to find out what kind of ovarian cyst that you have.
