Ovarian Cyst Dermoid

Ovarian Cyst Dermoid

If you have been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst that is dermoid, it can be uncharted territory if you have never had cyst issues before. This is always a bit frightening at first. While most ovarian cysts are monitored closely, and dissolve by themselves, others can be a more problematic. The ovarian cyst that is dermoid is a complex ovarian cyst which can cause a variety of serious issues if not dealt with. If it ruptures, it can cause serious danger to the patient.

Finding and diagnosing this type of cyst is very difficult. These cysts usually are found during a routine pelvic exam and are very common. They count for over one third of the benign cysts found in women.

Composition of an Ovarian Cyst That is Dermoid

A cyst that is found to be dermoid is a bit terrifying because of what they are made of. These start out as a single cell in the ovary but develop into many different types of tissue. This type of cyst is not made up of just fluid and solid matter with no distinction but can actually contain bits of hair, bone, dental material, sweat glands and even thyroid material. Sometimes these facts when revealed to a woman can be very upsetting.

Treatment Options

Once a doctor has performed a pelvic exam and discovers the cyst, he will discuss treatment options available to the patient. Just the size alone can be a determining factor in the doctor calling for surgical removal. Even though some cysts can be only a few centimeters in diameter, this can still be enough to cause considerable pain for the patient. Other cysts have been recorded as 17 inches in size and these are life threatening.

This size of cyst is always removed as an emergency surgery. The larger the dermoid type cyst is the more dangerous to the patient’s well-being it is. These larger cysts make for a risky surgery. The doctor will recommend medications that should shrink the dermoid cyst but if these don’t work, and then removal surgery is required. However, surgery is always a last resort.

There is another danger other than just the size of the complex cyst. This type of cyst can actually twist inside the ovary and cut off the blood flow. This can do permanent damage to the ovary itself. Not only that, but the twisting can cause the woman very intense pain. If the pain is too overwhelming, the woman may insist on removal surgery. It is an incapacitating pain for some women.

The good news about these painful cysts is that they are very rarely cancerous. If treated in the proper manner, they do not interfere with infertility either. Many women who have had these ovarian cysts which are dermoid have gone on to have healthy and normal pregnancies.

For most women, these ovarian cysts that are dermoid aren’t even noticed. There have been many cases of women finding out during normal pelvic exams that they have these kinds of cysts without ever having any symptoms.
