Multiple Ovarian Cysts

Multiple Ovarian Cysts

There are a big majority of women in their fertile years who suffer from an endocrine imbalance which causes multiple ovarian cysts. This condition is called polycystic ovarian syndrome. Not all women who suffer with POS get these multiple ovarian cysts though. However, this is the most common symptom of this disorder. These have the appearance of a pearl necklace along the ovaries.

The thought that this condition is only present in those who have reached adulthood has been proven to be a myth. This is a genetic condition. Although not a proven fact as yet, it is believed that the actual beginnings of this condition is present before the patient is even born.

There are many other symptoms of PCOS other than the multiple ovarian cysts. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, irregular menstrual cycles or missed cycles, not being able to become pregnant, miscarriages, diabetes, obesity, loss of hair or premature baldness, acne, thick patches of skin on the body which are black or dark brown in color, excessive facial hair, high blood pressure, skin tags and loss of sleep. Women with multiple ovarian cysts are in considerable pain most of the time and also suffer from depression and anxiety disorders.

There are several paths pursued by doctors in the treatment of PCOS which include contraceptive pills, hormone pills or shots, fertility drugs or even in vitro fertilization if the patient is trying to have a child. These usually correct the irregular menstrual periods and infertility problems. The treatments below are also used to treat other aspects of PCOS.

Metformin

Patients with multiple ovarian cysts often suffer from hyperinsulinmia which is a form of nascent diabetes. With this condition, the pancreas produces too much insulin. This is treated with oral medications such as metformin which is also called Glucophage. Metformin not only slows down the insulin production, but also helps with other symptoms of PCOS including excessive hair, obesity and high cholesterol. After several months on this medication, ovulation may resume again.

Anti-androgenic Drugs

Androgens, which are usually thought of as exclusively hormones found in men, are present in cases of multiple ovarian cysts. It is normal for all women to produce a small amount of this hormone but those who suffer from PCOS have too much of this and it results in the excessive facial hair, hair loss, or overly oily skin and acne.

Surgery

In addition to the above treatments, there is also a non-invasive form of surgery called “ovarian drilling” which is used on women as a last resort treatment. Put simply, the doctor drill very small holes into the ovaries to drain the fluids. This is done to make the woman’s menstrual cycle more regular so that the eggs can develop fully. This also slows down the androgen hormone production as well. However, there is a risk of developing ovarian scar tissue.

You should discuss these treatments with your doctor if you have multiple ovarian cysts. Which option is best for you will then be de
