Cure for Ovarian Cyst
HelpĀ for Ovarian Cyst
Is there a cure for ovarian cysts? For most women, the development of ovarian cysts is normal. These fluid filled sacs which grow either inside or on the surface cells of the ovary are mostly benign, sometimes though these get to be problematic. Although there isn’t a cure for ovarian cyst, if these become numerous, there are options.
Watch and wait
Many women who are in their childbearing years have the option of watching the cyst and waiting to see if it dissolves on its own, which it usually does. This is only if the cyst isn’t causing any major problems and if a sonogram or ultrasound shows no significant abnormalities.
By using further ultrasound readings, the cyst can be monitored. Your doctor will be watching for any growth of the cyst. Since there is no cure for ovarian cysts, for the post-menopausal woman the “watch and wait” option is recommended for small cysts which only contain fluid. These should dissolve on their own in time. Someday there will be a cure for ovarian cysts.
Alternative Ways to Treat Ovarian Cysts
Cysts which prevent blood flow to the ovaries continue to grow, or have cancerous cells cannot be monitored. Still, some form of treating the cyst has to be done so some women prefer what is called alternative treatments. Sometimes these treatments are used together with traditional treatments. Although not a cure for ovarian cysts, alternative treatments can include herbal remedies (check with your doctor first), dietary changes including reducing intake of red meat, high antioxidant supplements and other natural remedies.
These won’t get rid of ovarian cysts but some women report that they have had good results with these. Alternative treatments might also prevent the ovarian cyst from getting larger too.
Traditional Treatments That Help
Choosing the best options among traditional treatments for ovarian cysts depends on a lot of different angles. This includes whether or not the woman wants to have more children, the severity and location of the cysts, and the woman’s general health.
Contraceptives
Sometimes birth control pills are prescribed to women who have ovarian cysts. These decrease the chances of developing more cysts in the future and deter ovarian cancer. Birth control pills also help to regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle. For those women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome, this reduces the amount of testosterone produced. It will also reduce the androgen level for those with PCOS.
If you Need Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery may seem like the only way to get rid of ovarian cysts forever. Small holes are drilled into the cyst, draining the hormone fluids. This not only helps to regulate a woman’s periods but also helps in conception for those who want children.
If you have a cyst that is abnormally large or causing severe pain, it can be removed surgically. This is typically recommended for menopausal women. It does not interfere with conception and does not hinder fertility. However, if the cyst is malignant, a hysterectomy is recommended.
Talk to your doctor about your options if you have one or more cysts. Never ignore your symptoms especially if they are accompanied by pain. Research is currently being done to find a cure for ovarian cysts.
