Bursting Ovarian Cysts

Bursting Ovarian Cysts

When you become a victim of bursting ovarian cysts, it comes as quite a surprise and not a nice one either. Most of the time ovarian cysts go unnoticed and go away on their own. If you have suffered from ovarian cysts before, you need to tell your doctor so that he can tell you what is happening. Although not fatal, the bursting ovarian cysts can be very painful and scary.

What Happens When a Cyst Bursts?

There are many causes for a cyst to burst. Cysts usually don’t cause any problems and simply dissolve on their own or shrink. If they do neither, the doctor can usually prescribe medication which will shrink these normally within two menstrual cycles. If the cyst continues to grow, it can rupture.

This is the worst case scenario for anyone with a cyst because when it does burst, it releases fluids and even sometimes blood. With a bursting ovarian cyst, this released fluid or blood is what causes the intense pain. The fluid cause’s pressure build up on the peritoneum and can result in pain and irritation. This can also lead to an infection caused by bacterial growth. This is what causes problems when you have a bursting ovarian cyst.

Symptoms of a Bursting Ovarian Cyst

There are a lot of symptoms that your ovarian cyst has burst. Intense pain is the first sign of a problem. This has been described as being the same as the pain of appendicitis. If you have had cysts before then you know the difference in the type of pain and intensity of the pain.

There may also be an unusual feeling of fullness in the abdomen. Frequent urination can sometimes accompany this pressure. This is pressure from the released fluid. If you have no other explanation for this, it could mean that your cyst has ruptured.

One other sign that should be an alert is irregular periods. Report this to your doctor especially if your periods have been regular before. Sometimes this will lead a woman to think that she is pregnant. If you are having extremely heavy periods and then very light periods, tell your doctor about this as well.

Any unusual vaginal bleeding should also be reported as well. Call your doctor immediately if this happens so that he can explain why this is happening. If you have any of these warning signs and they are associated with pain, you should seek medical help immediately. A ruptured cyst is nothing to play around with.

Don’t be embarrassed by these symptoms because they are very serious and should be reported immediately. Do not ignore these symptoms and think that they will go away. No one should be in this kind of pain for any length of time. Although the bursting ovarian cyst in itself isn’t dangerous, the infection that could result from it is serious. It could do permanent damage to your ovaries. It can also cause sterility if you leave the infection untreated for any time.
