Ovarian Cyst Causes

Reason of Cyst Causes

75% of women develop ovarian cysts during their life. Cysts are small sacs filled with fluid or mucous and look somewhat like a blister and affect women during their childbearing years. Most of these are benign and dissolve on their own. Nobody knows for sure what ovarian cyst causes are but it is agreed by experts that the most common type of functional ovarian cyst is caused by the failure of the egg to release during the menstrual cycle. Research is still being done on ovarian cyst causes but there are different types of these ovarian cysts.

The corpus luteum cyst develops during the ovulation process when a follicle is formed inside the ovary. This follicle is a cyst like growth. When the egg is released, the follicle ruptures. The corpus luteum forms in the empty follicle and dissolves when the egg is not fertilized. When the corpus luteum fails to dissolve, the cyst is formed. This is a functional ovarian cyst.

These cysts are usually benign and disappear in a few weeks but before it does it can grow very large and possibly bleed. If the ovary twists, cutting off the blood supply to the ovary, you may experience severe abdominal or pelvic cramps. Although rare, the cyst can fill with blood and rupture, causing internal bleeding and sudden, piercing pain. This is another type of ovarian cyst whose causes remain a mystery. There are other types of ovarian cysts of unknown causes which are considered abnormal.

Dermoid cysts are filled with fatty tissue or sometimes can even contain tissue such as hair, skin, teeth or cartilage. This is because they are made up of the type of cells which produce the human egg. When these cysts become very large they can actually push the ovary out of its normal position in the pelvis and cause it to twist around and although this can be very painful, it is usually benign.

Still another kind of ovarian cyst is the endometrioma cyst. This type of cyst develops from the tissue which is similar to the lining of the uterus and attaches to the ovaries. These types of cyst are known as “chocolate cysts” because of the blood which fills the cyst. They usually accompany the condition of endometriosis.

There are many variations of types of ovarian cysts. But the symptoms of these are usually the same. The follicular cyst develops when the egg produced isn’t fertilized or when the follicle collapses in on itself. Ovulation is when this cyst occurs and these can grow to be over two inches around. If this cyst ruptures, you will experience sharp pain on the side that the affected ovary is on. These cysts occur during the middle of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Both the follicular and the corpus luteum cysts causes are similar but the symptoms are very different in nature. Both the hemorrhagic and follicular cysts will produce abdominal pain in one side.

Research is still being conducted to find exact ovarian cyst causes and maybe someday women will not have to suffer from these cysts.
