Ovarian Cysts during Pregnancy

Ovarian Cysts while Pregnancy

There are some women who have a really hard time getting pregnant. Dealing with the extra worry of having an ovarian cyst during pregnancy is not a problem that a woman wants to deal with, especially if she has had trouble getting pregnant and not having a miscarriage.

Cysts can be Very Common for Some

Some women are bothered with ovarian cysts from the time they have their first period. They may have went to several doctors and still suffer from these painful growths. The earlier in years that a woman starts having her period, the more likely she is to suffer from these cysts on a continuous basis. Most women just deal with the pain using birth control pills, OTC pain relievers, or prescription pain medications. Even if you have had problems with cysts before, having one while you are pregnant can be an entirely different set of problems.

There is nothing doctors can do to prevent these cysts but they usually dissolve on their own. While in their reproductive years, women find out that they have a cyst and didn’t even realize it.

How to Manage an Ovarian Cyst While you are Pregnant

When a woman frequently suffers from painful cysts, she is naturally a little fearful of getting pregnant. Ovarian cysts during pregnancy can conjure up some pretty scary images. These women deal with painful cysts on a monthly basis so the idea of a painful pregnancy can put these women off of pregnancy altogether. For the most part, these fears are unfounded. One in every thousand women deal with cysts during pregnancy, usually these just dissolve as would any other ovarian cyst. When you are pregnant though, the doctor will want to keep the growth and size of the cyst monitored. He will also want to know what kind of cyst it is.

If there are multiple cysts developed during the pregnancy, the doctor will suggest ways to make the patient more comfortable. Surgery to remove the cyst is not an option when the patient is pregnant. Prescription pain medications are not an option either since it will affect the baby in utero. There is, however, holistic treatments that are available as long as the patient is closely monitored during these treatments by the doctor. These can provide both safety for the baby and comfort for the expectant mother.

When to Become Apprehensive

Although it is rare, there are symptoms which can cause reasonable alarm. The cyst can become a great risk if it is found to be malignant. Also, if the cyst grows large enough it can actually cause the woman to have a miscarriage. A malignant cyst means that the pregnancy has to be very closely monitored by the doctor. Any kind of surgery is a risk to both the baby and the mother. A doctor who is a specialist in this kind of situation and is familiar with the family history can make the best call on the kind of treatment to be pursued. The most important thing will be to keep the cyst from rupturing during the pregnancy. Careful considerations of treatment options for a malignant ovarian cyst during pregnancy can be very important to the health of the baby and the mother
